RELIGION

We want children to understand what we believe as Christians and how to live out those beliefs.

We Believe; beliefs or doctrine as explained by the Catholic Church

We Worship:celebrating the Sacraments of the Church and learning we are called to serve

We Live: our call to holiness, making choices, loving God and one another

We Pray: People of prayer, forms of prayer and prayers of the faith found in the back of your child’s text

SPELLING:

We want children to learn to spell those English words  essential to basic literacy.

These strategies are used: sound-symbol patterns, memory, structural elements such as rules for the formation of plurals, possessives, contractions, related words:teach and use words students misspell most often in their writing and help the child to become spelling conscious. Our new Spelling program is Scott Foresman.

ENGLISH:

We want children to learn to speak and write in a correct grammatical and fluent manner.

Grammar, usage, and mechanics are taught for one half of the year and the writing process in detail covering prewriting, drafting,revising,proofreading and publishing, with emphasis on capitalization and punctuation.

READING:

We want children to learn to read for enjoyment and increase knowledge of vocabulary, word attack skills and comprehension.

The Accelerated Reading program, a computer based testing program based on the varieties of books rated at appropriate reading levels, is one half of the sixth grade curriculum.

The new basic reading series uses many cross curriculum stories arranged in topics and accompanied by skills and techniques to increase reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and reading enjoyment. Our new Reading series is “Great Expectations” published by Scott Foresman.

MATH:

We want our children to be proficient in the mechanics of mathematics; addition, subtraction, multiplication (0’s thorough 12’s,) and division of whole numbers,decimal fractions,and common fractions. Our lessons go beyond the topics of arithmetic to include foundational topics of geometry, measurement, algebra,number, and scale and graph reading.

Word problems include items from history and science as well as from the realm of imagination.

Rather than providing practice in only the new topic, the problem sets review everything that has been taught previously.

The daily Math assignment is done in school. However, the book can be taken home for study, review and practice.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

We want children to think critically and solve problems,learn strategies to become lifetime learners, to improve geographic literacy so they may understand the world around them, to learn good citizenship skills through real-world examples.

Our text, “Our World” encompasses learning about Early People and their Civilizations,

The Ancient World, New Forces in the World,The World Expands and Changes, and A Stormy Century.

SCIENCE:

We want children to use scientific methods for science inquiry. We want children to use process skills for science inquiry. Our text is divided into four units with four chapter topics in each unit.

Unit A: Life Science consists of the structure and function of cells,reproduction and heredity, ecosystems and biomes.

Unit B : Physical Science consists of heat and matter, light, sound and color, and moving objects.

Unit C: Earth Science consists of technology and weather, exploring the universe.

Unit D: Human Body consists of your body’s control system, drugs and your body.

The scientific method of stating the problem; formulating a hypothesis, identify and control variables, test the hypothesis, collect and interpret data, the state a conclusion is often used to finding answers and solving scientific problems.
