15th ANNUAL
WALK-A-THON KICKOFF

Today, we had an assembly to kick off our 15th Annual Walk-a-thon. This fund raiser will take place from August 27, - October 6, 2010. Information about The Saint Joseph School / Kas Greff Memorial Walk-a-thon is being sent home today. There are more pledge sheets available at the school office. Please pay special attention to the dates and the incentives. Our first turn in day is Thursday, September 2, 2010.
During the assembly I really tried to stress to the students, the real incentive of collecting the money for this fund raiser, should be technology and new textbooks! I would also ask you to stress that concept to your children, to do it for the good of the school! We need to keep our curriculum and technology current and up to date; therefore, your help and support of this fund raiser is very important! A special thank you to Mandy Sheldon & Melissa Mosbrucker for Co-Chairing this fund raiser.

SJS HANDBOOK

All SJS families received a handbook this week and hopefully you have had a chance to read through it with your child(ren). Please keep this in a handy place in your home, in case you need to refer to it. There were a few changes made in the handbook, so please read the entire handbook carefully. Both you and your child(ren) must sign the final page and return it to the classroom teacher. Thanks

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Many informative items are sent home from school throughout the year. This information is to keep you informed of the happenings at Saint Joseph School. It is of great importance that you and your child read these newsletters so that you can be kept up to date. I am also asking that you ask your child and check their book bags on a daily basis to see what is being sent home. I send a school newsletter home on Fridays; although it may not be every Friday, and the classroom teachers also send weekly newsletters. Please read through this, I realize everyone is busy, but it only takes a few minutes, and I ask that you not wait until Monday morning to do this. Thank You for your cooperation in helping us keep you informed!

THIRD GRADE

For the past several years we have been having our fourth and fifth grade students use planners for their assignments. After much thought and discussion we have decide the assignment planner will be a very beneficial tool for our third grade students also. The planners have been ordered, parents will be notified when they arrive, and the cost will be $3.50 for each planner.

BASKETBALL ACADEMY

Info regarding a Basketball Academy is on the back of this newsletter.

DRESS CODE POLICY

When we implemented our SJS Dress Code Policy, several years ago, there was much discussion and thought put into the planning, as to which clothing supplier we would use. It was strongly suggested that we use a company from Minneapolis, because all of the clothing items would need to be purchased through our school. This would avoid having a hodge podge of clothing & would also assure us that everyone would be following our policy.
I convinced the committee, the Minneapolis company was not the best decision because of the expense. I stressed the affordability and also the convenience of having J C Penney as our supplier. The decision was made that we would only allow families to purchase Dress Code Clothing through J C Penney & then we also brought French Toast pants into our Dress Code Policy.
We are at the end of our first week of school and already we are noticing children that are not wearing the J C Penney clothing. When you signed the Parent/Student Handbook, you agreed to all Saint Joseph School Policies, including purchasing Dress Code Clothing items at J C Penney and pants through French Toast. Some of you are not only purchasing the off brand of clothing, you are bringing those off brands in and adding them to our used clothing table. This is giving the message to new families that it is ok to not follow the SJS Dress Code Policy!
I am asking for your cooperation and your commitment to purchase only from J C Penney and pants from French Toast, before the decision is made to switch to purchasing Dress Code Clothing through the Minneapolis Company.
In order to avoid checking clothing tags and having to call parents at work, we are asking for 100% cooperation of the dress code! Please go through your children's clothing & GET RID of those items that you did not purchase at J C Penney!

FREE CLOTHING

If you are in need of some good used dress code clothing items, please stop by the school office. I would like to thank you for your continued support of the dress code and I ask for your ongoing support of following the dress code throughout the year. Your support is very much needed and appreciated!

EARLY ARRIVALS

As in past years, we ask that your child(ren) not arrive at school before 8:30 AM. We are happy to know that children are very eager to come to school in the morning, but this time before school, is a work time for the teachers and we ask for your cooperation with this matter. When bus students arrive at school in the morning, they may go to their rooms.

MARK PERSONAL ITEMS

A reminder to all parents to be sure to mark any personal items your child brings to school. It is best to use permanent markers on those items. With several red, navy, and white sweaters and sweatshirts, it will be impossible to determine who the owner is, unless the items are marked!

BUS STUDENTS

If your child is not going to be riding the bus home after school, PLEASE notify the school office and also the bus garage at 663-7036. You can either have your child stop by the office and let us know or call the office. It’s very confusing for both the bus driver and our supervisor when they do not know if your child is riding. Thanks

The IZOD CO., which is a brand of our Dress Code Clothing, offers 5% back to our school for each IZOD receipt we turn in. Please continue sending or bringing your receipts in and we will make copies and return the original to you.

FRIDAY POPCORN SALES

Every Friday we end the week offering students, parents, and staff the opportunity to purchase bottled water, pop, popcorn, or candy. The individual items can be purchased for 25 or 50˘. Proceeds from this project go into the Sponsorship Fund, which in turn helps families with tuition assistance.

SCRIPS

We want to encourage everyone to get into the habit of using SCRIPS. As it has been explained many times this is one fund raiser that costs you nothing extra, there is no door to door selling, and the profits go to Saint Joseph School and Parish. I am being told that some people do not know what a SCRIP is. Hopefully my explanation will help, SCRIPS are gift certificates that we purchase from numerous businesses. These businesses give Saint Joseph School and Parish a percentage discount when we purchase the certificates. We in turn sell you the certificate, which you can use at face value, but we do not make a profit until you purchase the certificate from us. If you still have questions, please call or stop at the school office and we will be more than happy to explain the SCRIP Program to you.
The profits from the SCRIP Account are used for ongoing maintenance. We have ongoing maintenance at Saint Joseph, just as everyone does in their homes. The SCRIP Account also helps keep the cost of tuition down, because it serves as another source of income for Saint Joseph!
Please keep SCRIPS in mind when you are purchasing school clothes at J C Penney. You can also use Kohls SCRIPS to pay off your Kohls credit card. Thank you to those of you that do purchase SCRIPS! They can be purchased at the school, parish office, and after Mass on the weekends. If you are not in the habit of buying SCRIPS, then please give it a try and see how habit forming it can be.
There is a SCRIP Form, along with a Permission Form going home today. The Permission Form gives us permission to send SCRIP Certificates home with your child. Please sign and return it to the school office. Please take some time to look over the SCRIP Form, fill it out, attach payment, (cash or check) send it to school with your child and we will send the SCRIP Certificates home. It really is that easy!

GREETINGS FROM MPD

Welcome back to school and to your new class rooms and teachers.

Safety tips:

•Students that walk or ride bicycles to school please use the side walks and cross walks and wear your helmet when you ride a bicycle.
•Students that ride in a vehicle be sure to wear your seat belt and get out on the curb side of the vehicle, never on the traffic side. Do not run between parked vehicles.
•Students that ride the bus, please be friendly and helpful to others that ride the bus with you. •Be sure to cross the road in front of the bus only when the bus red stop lights are on.
Parents that drive their children to school please do not double park in front of the school and respect the space provided for the school buses as they have a challenging responsibility to keep children safe and need your help. If you see anything that is unsafe please report it to the school principal right away.
Officers are available to get involved with your safety programs.
Have a great school year.
Learn and make friends,
Officer Dave Mills
